“SHE CAN GET A VISA”: How Nationality and Class Shape Decision Making at a Kenyan NGO

Prior studies show how race, class, and gender matter for worker identities within organizations, but there is an opportunity to focus on nationality class background nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Using evidence from ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, organizational documents at a small NGO in Kenya, I mediate workers assign accomplish tasks. My results suggest that process of elastic transnational stratification determines distribute tasks decision-making power relation the location domain which they must act. While both are used as proxies one’s proximity influence, instances where less privileged more strategic deploy. Nationality shape access various development spaces, amount type resources one can attain behalf organization, legitimacy locally global level.
